Ears that frame the face, going unnoticed

Ears in perfect balance with the face

Unlike the eyes and mouth that attract attention and often elicit admiring comments, ears are a facial feature that tends to go unnoticed. If they become prominent, it means that the size or position of the ears is such that they do not harmoniously frame the face, stand out strongly and steal attention from the more expressive features of the face.

With modern otoplasty techniques, we correct the size, position and projection of the ears, so that they are in perfect balance with the rest of the face. We can also reshape the folds (anthelical and concha) as well as the contour of the ears (helical and lobe), to create a more harmonious shape. Our goal is for the ears to go unnoticed thanks to their naturalness.

    Detailed surgical plan design

Detailed measurements to determine the appropriate technique

The normal ear flap has a very characteristic, recognizable shape. Although there are several variations, significant deviations from the "normal" are immediately noticeable. Correction requires very careful anatomical analysis to determine the exact cause and design the appropriate surgical plan.

To determine the surgical plan, we take specific photographs and measurements of the ears. We compare the flaps with each other, both in terms of symmetry and their projection from the head. We also evaluate their proportion in relation to the rest of the facial features. Then, we examine the morphology of the flaps, in order to determine any deviations from the normal form.

We also observe the relationship between specific structures of the ear, as the desired balance is between the helix and the antihelix, the tragus and the antitragus, for example. We also check the position of the ears, as we know that their highest point should ideally be in line with the eyebrows, while we also examine the excess skin behind the pinna, as well as the thickness and elasticity of the cartilage.

Otoplasty for protruding ears (protruding ears)

Protruding ears (protruding ears) are a very common phenomenon, with a frequency exceeding 51%. This problem related to the shape and position of the ears can be mild with the flaps protruding slightly from the head but having their normal folds and contour, but more significant issues with their size, shape and folds (e.g. bat ears) can also be observed.

With otoplasty, we correct protruding ears by reducing the so-called otocephalic angle, that is, the angle between the ears and the head, so that the flaps do not protrude significantly. To achieve this, we make a small incision on the back of the ear and through it we sculpt the ear cartilage or remove a part of it. In addition, if necessary, we reconstruct the lack of folding of the helix or antihelix, as well as the excessive curvature of the concha, which are usually responsible for the increase in the otocephalic angle and the phenomenon of protruding ears.

    2+1 reasons

so as not to delay otoplasty

Otoplasty is the only method that can correct the shape, size, position and projection of the ears. Given that ear development is complete by the age of 6, it is recommended that the surgery be performed before the start of school.

Ears don't change as you grow older.

Many parents tend to delay their child's otoplasty, thinking that the shape or position of the ears will improve until adulthood. Unfortunately, this is not the case, as the congenital shape and position of the auricle do not change as the child grows. The only thing that changes is their size, which reaches its final size around the age of 6. Precisely because the ears are the first human organ to complete their development so quickly, any deformities or strange ear shapes in children are visible from a very early age.

There are no natural ways to fix it

It has been proven that there is no natural way to correct protruding ears. The attempts of some parents to use bandages or other means to stabilize their children's ears in a more desirable position, nor of course to force children to sleep alternately on the right and left sides with the aim of pressing on the ears and "correcting" them on their own, have absolutely no effect.

    Children's psychology is burdened

As the ears take their final shape by the age of 6, it is recommended that otoplasty be performed before the start of the school year. This way, children can integrate more smoothly into the school environment and avoid annoying teasing from their classmates, which often leads boys and girls to wear long, sleek hair, wear hats, and avoid earrings so as not to attract attention and comments about their ears.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the normal size of the ear?

The pinna reaches 85% of its adult size by the age of 3 years and 90-95% of its final size by the age of 5-6 years. In some cases it can lengthen by 1-1.5 cm during adult life. The width of the ear ideally corresponds to 55% of its length. The "idealized" dimensions are:

    • 63.5 millimeters by 35.3 millimeters for men
    • 59.0 millimeters by 32.5 millimeters for women.

The angle of projection of the pinna (or otocephalic angle) is usually between 15-30 degrees.

From what age can otoplasty be performed for protruding ears?

Protruding ears (protruding ears) appear from early childhood. In some cases, they can also appear in adulthood. The ideal age for otoplasty is between 4 and 6 years old. At this age, the ear flap has almost reached its final size. Moreover, at this age the child is able to participate in the post-operative care of his ears. It is also a good time, as the child is preparing for his school entry. Unfortunately, protruding ears are often the subject of comments from young classmates.

    How is otoplasty performed?

Otoplasty is a safe procedure, which in adults is performed under local anesthesia in the clinic. The recovery period is short and the results are immediate. It remains a simple procedure for children, however, in whom general anesthesia is applied. The procedure takes about an hour. At Antiagers we apply modern techniques of sculpting the ear cartilage to correct the shape, size and projection of the auricle.

    Is the otoplasty scar visible?

No. The otoplasty scar is well hidden behind the ear. It is approximately 3 centimeters long and is our only entry point to the ear cartilage. Over time, the scar takes on the color of the skin. Especially in children, whose skin cells regenerate so quickly, within a short period of time the scar may not even be detectable.

When will the stitches be removed?

The sutures we place in otoplasty are usually absorbable, so they do not need to be removed.

When will I return to my activities?

Adults can return to work the next day (office work). For children, returning to school is recommended after about 10 days. This way, any accidents or awkward blows from classmates are avoided.

Will I need to wear a bandage?

Once the surgery is complete, an elastic band is placed around the ears to apply moderate pressure for approximately two weeks.

Is there a chance that my hearing will be affected?

No. The goal of otoplasty is to correct the shape, size, or even position of the auricle, which is achieved by sculpting the ear cartilage in the outer ear. In no case is the auditory canal affected, nor are the other anatomical structures associated with hearing located in the middle and inner ear.
