    What you need to know:

    What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers or ceramic veneers are thin coverings that are placed on the surface of the tooth and can correct aesthetic or structural defects. They are made of a durable and thin layer of porcelain and offer a strong, beautiful and natural smile.

Veneers are a great option if your teeth are permanently discolored, do not respond to whitening solutions, are cracked, or misshapen. They can also reduce gaps between teeth or adjust minor bite-related problems.

In some cases, where teeth are severely damaged or worn, other treatment options such as ceramic crowns or dental bridges may be needed.

The specialized dentists at The Antiagers recommend porcelain veneers to patients who want to close gaps in their teeth, treat any discolored teeth, or restore their natural smile.

    How do aspects work?

Veneers are custom-made porcelain shells made to fit over the surface of your teeth. Even if minimal tooth surface reduction is required, a very shallow grinding (the thickness of a contact lens) is usually done first to ensure proper adhesion of the veneers. Each set of veneers is custom-made to fit your teeth precisely, requiring an appointment for both fabrication and placement.

Contrary to popular belief, veneers do not always require extensive tooth surface reduction. While some cases, such as severe tooth misalignment or a desire to reduce tooth size, may require significant grinding, many patients may choose to have a minimal amount of enamel removed, usually around 0.3-0.7 millimeters.

    The process

The porcelain veneers procedure typically takes three appointments over approximately 2-3 weeks. The initial session includes an examination of your teeth by the dentist of The Antiagers team, taking initial intraoral and extraoral photos and discussing your goals, while the second appointment involves a 3D visualization inside your mouth to see LIVE exactly what the final result will be like. This way, the aesthetic result is fully predictable and each patient is aware in advance of what their smile will look like once the porcelain veneers are attached.
Finally, the veneers are applied and permanently bonded during the third appointment.

    Step by Step

    Step 1

    Diagnosis and Plan Design

During the first visit, The Antiagers dentist assesses the condition of your dental barrier and discusses the goals of porcelain veneers with you, ensuring clear communication about the limitations and expectations of the procedure. X-rays may also be taken to assist in diagnosis and planning.

    Step 2

    Preparation and manufacturing

During the preparation stage, a model or impression of your teeth is made and, if necessary, your teeth are adjusted or sharpened to ensure a proper fit. Temporary veneers are provided while the permanent ones are fabricated.

    Step 3

    Application and Welding

During the final appointment, your veneers are bonded to your teeth, with adjustments made as needed for the desired appearance. Dental bonding material is used to secure the veneers in place and any excess material is removed. Aftercare instructions are provided, and a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to check for any problems.

    Porcelain veneers vs Resin veneers

Before undergoing any dental solution, especially one as permanent as veneers, it is important to weigh the options to ensure they meet your needs. Porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers have distinct differences that can significantly impact the decision-making process.

    Application Speed

Resin veneers have a faster application process.

    Durability

Porcelain veneers offer a longer lifespan compared to composite veneers.
    Porcelain: 9-15 years
    Resin: 6-7 years

    Durability and Repair

Strength: Porcelain veneers are stronger than their resin counterparts.

Repairability: Damaged porcelain veneers require replacement, while resin veneers can be repaired.

    Natural appearance & Durability

Natural appearance: Porcelain veneers tend to better mimic natural teeth in terms of light reflection.

Stain resistance: Porcelain veneers resist stains, while composite veneers discolor over time because resin is a porous material. This is why they require polishing appointments every 6-9 months.

    Choosing the right aspects

Considering these factors, porcelain veneers are generally considered superior due to their durability and natural appearance.

Porcelain veneers are ideal for people looking for a long-term solution to dental imperfections such as unevenness, discoloration, or erosion.

On the other hand, composite veneers may suit those looking for a more affordable and cost-effective solution.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who needs porcelain veneers?

Patients with healthy gums, good oral hygiene, and good bone structure are ideal candidates. To change the color, shape, or size of teeth, veneers may be a good option for you.

If you have crooked teeth and want to correct them, you may want to first consider other options such as orthodontic solutions.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

On average, porcelain veneers can last up to 15 years, while composite resin veneers typically last up to 7. However, with proper care, you may be able to extend this life expectancy.

Are porcelain veneers stronger than real teeth?

The composition of the veneers makes them particularly resistant to the appearance of cracks, although the patient's behavior after placement is in accordance with general instructions such as avoiding very hard foods or using teeth as tools.

Do veneers have the feel and durability of real teeth?

If your dentist has placed the dental veneers correctly, they should feel like your natural teeth.
